Read Hosea 2.14-23. In verses 14-15: References to the wilderness, the Valley of Achor, and the land of Egypt recall Israel's deliverance from slavery in Egypt (Ex 1-15), its journey through the wilderness (Ex 16-Num 36), and its entrance in Canaan (Josh 7.24-26). In verse 16: Hosea plays on the multiple meanings of the Hebrew word "ba'al": it can be used as a common noun meaning "husband" or "master" or as a the name of the Canaanite god Baal.
